ruby dachis (b.2003) is an Austin raised, Brooklyn based visual artist.
ruby largely uses portraiture to amplify the dissonances and harmonies in her own relationships with intimacy, familiarity, and mundanity. she is attracted to that which she knows is present and felt but which may not be visible or articulable:
signals and calls. laws of gravity and mass and weight. frequencies. feathers. fever pitches. laws of magnetics — that is, undeniable pulls. drawing as in compelling. drawing as in invoking. drawing as in heaving from the depths of a well.
fascinations include: placemaking, commonplacing, wayfinding. linguistic anthropology, personal semiotics. black holes, moon towers, southern gothic, skin. electricity, play, belonging, embodied joy. irreparable damage. urgency. potency.
her practice comprises constant writing, scrupulous reading, diligent listening, painting, drawing, sculpture, creative direction, ephemeral public installation, and printmaking. she works in oil, gouache, written word, watercolor, acrylic, ink, graphite, pastel, ceramic, wire, metal, textile, wood, hair, glass, performance, papier-mâché, spit, film & digital photography, intaglio, photo-intaglio, linocut, and relief.
ruby graduated from Saint Ann’s School, Brooklyn, NY in the spring of 2022. after attending Oberlin College and the UCLA School of Fine Arts and Architecture, she is completing her undergraduate degrees in Fine Art and English at Wesleyan University. her work has been featured in the Saint Ann’s RAM, the Saint Ann’s High School Literary Magazine, the Saint Ann’s Art Journal, and the Oberlin College Wilder Voice.
