Picnic

Oil on chipboard, 18" x 9", 2023

"Picnic", a painting I made in my Spring 2023 landscape painting course at Oberlin, depicts one small corner of a large gathering. I'm always attracted to the strangeness of light on skin, to how and where it pools, and to the surreal effect that late-summer sun seems to have on time. It slows to a honeyed drip, like so much amber. This is a landscape of bodies, a landscape of picnic blankets and pizza boxes, a landscape made rosy by the glow of mosquito-ravaged summer legs, easy after, candles for another year around the sun. My favorite kind.
